TL;DR
TL;DR: Quick Answer
The printed receipt is one of the most underused menu touchpoints in restaurants. Guests leave with one (or see one for split bills), and many keep it after the meal. The right receipt includes: a small QR code linking to the digital menu, optional review/loyalty CTA, leftover-meal info (storage tips for takeaway boxes). Setup depends on your POS: Toast, Square, Clover, and Lightspeed all support custom receipt footer text or images. The QR menu on the receipt can drive repeat visits and online reviews, and both effects compound over time.
Why Receipts Are Underused
Why Receipts Are A Missed Opportunity
A typical restaurant receipt shows the total, items, tax, tip line, and payment info, and nothing else. Yet receipts are:
- Often retained. Tax records, expense reports, customer's own bookkeeping. Receipts stick around longer than table tents (which stay on the table) or window decals (which the customer walked past once).
- Reviewed at home. The customer is in a different mental state than during the meal: relaxed, possibly with friends/family discussing the experience. The QR menu link is a low-pressure invitation to revisit.
- Shared casually. "Try this place" conversations often involve handing over a receipt, screenshotting it, or texting a photo. The QR code on the receipt is a built-in referral link.
- Cheap to add. Many POS systems allow custom receipt footer text or an image with no per-receipt cost, so the added cost is close to zero.
What to Include on the Receipt
| Element | Position | Cost | Main Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| QR code linking to digital menu | Footer | $0 (POS configuration) | Drives repeat visit menu views |
| "Leave a review" CTA + QR | Footer | $0 | Can increase review submissions |
| Loyalty signup CTA | Footer | $0 | Can increase loyalty enrollment |
| Leftover storage tips | Footer | $0 | Goodwill (no direct conversion) |
| Next-visit discount code | Footer | Cost of discount | Can bring guests back sooner |
| Social handles | Footer | $0 | Marginal: easy to ignore |
How to Add Menu QR to Restaurant Receipts
Generate the QR code
Many POS systems support custom receipt images. Generate a small QR (about 2-3cm; receipts are narrow, but smaller codes can blur on thermal printers) using your menu platform's built-in tool or our free QR Generator. Save as PNG with high contrast (black on white).
Configure your POS receipt footer
In your POS back office, open the receipt settings and add the QR image plus one line of CTA text to the footer. Menu paths differ by vendor and version; see the POS-specific notes below.
Choose receipt CTA copy
Options: 'Scan for our menu: see daily specials' / 'Loved your meal? Scan to leave a review' / 'Free dessert next visit, scan to claim'. Test 2-3 variations one at a time, a few weeks each, and compare what each is meant to drive: views of your receipt menu for the menu CTA, new reviews for the review CTA, redemptions for the dessert offer.
Track receipt views separately
Menujo's analytics count menu views without a source breakdown, so a UTM tag on the menu URL will not show up in the dashboard. To measure receipts on their own, publish a separate menu for receipts with the same items (Pro and above; Free includes one menu), encode that menu's URL in the receipt QR, and filter analytics to that menu. Its view count is then your receipt count. Edits to your main menu do not carry over, so update both. If the receipt QR points at a review or loyalty page instead, append ?utm_source=receipt&utm_medium=printed&utm_campaign=evergreen so your own web analytics can attribute it.
Print test receipt
Run a $0.01 test transaction and print the receipt. Verify QR scans correctly with 2-3 different phones. Test in dim lighting (typical for restaurants). If scan rate is iffy, increase QR size on the receipt template.
Train staff to mention
When handing the receipt: 'We've added our menu QR if you want to share it with friends.' Keep it casual. Don't over-script, because natural delivery beats scripted lines.
What POS Systems Support This
POS-Specific Setup Notes
Toast POS
Native support for a custom receipt image plus footer text. In Toast Web, go to Finance > Related > Settings > Guest receipt setup. Toast suggests a logo of 400 to 600 pixels. See Toast's receipt setup guide for current steps.
Square for Restaurants
In Square Dashboard, go to Settings > Account & Settings > Payments > Receipts. Add a Custom Text message. The only image Square documents for receipts is your logo (at least 400 x 200 px for a printed logo), so check Square's receipt guide before planning a QR image in the footer.
Clover
Setup app > Payment receipts (or Settings > Payment receipts on the dashboard): add custom footer text and turn on a logo or custom image, which uploads on the dashboard only. See Clover's receipt guide.
Lightspeed Restaurant
On K-Series, go to Back Office > Payment > Receipt. Use "+ Change logo" for a logo and "+ Add footer line" for footer text; a footer line can print a QR code natively with @QR@(your menu URL). See Lightspeed's receipt template guide.
Smaller / regional POS
Many thermal-receipt printers accept ESC/POS commands that include image printing. If your POS doesn't have UI configuration, your POS vendor or technician can add a custom footer image.
Common Mistakes
Common Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)
QR too small for thermal-printer resolution
Thermal printers have lower resolution than inkjet. A QR that looks fine on screen may print blurry. Test with actual receipt prints before rollout. Increase to 2-3cm if scan rate is poor.
QR placed at the very bottom gets cut off
Some POS receipt rolls cut paper at variable lengths. If the QR is at the absolute bottom, some receipts may print without it. Position it 2-3 lines above the cut.
No CTA copy
A bare QR on the receipt has no context. Customers wonder "why is this here?" Add 1 line: 'Scan for our menu' or 'Scan to leave a review'.
Single CTA: rotate or A/B test instead
Receipt CTA can be: menu, review, loyalty, next-visit-discount. Different goals at different times. Restaurants doing well operationally should rotate CTA based on need (e.g., 'review' push during slow review months, 'return discount' push during slow seasons).
No way to attribute receipt traffic
Without some form of attribution, you can't measure whether receipts drive any menu views or reviews at all. Menujo counts menu views without a source dimension, so a UTM tag on the menu URL is invisible in its dashboard. On Pro and above, give the receipt its own separate menu with its own QR, and filter analytics to that menu. Remember to repeat menu edits on that second menu. Add ?utm_source=receipt to any review or loyalty link your own web analytics can read. The data is the whole point of the channel.
How Menujo Works as Your Receipt QR Source
A receipt QR only gets scanned occasionally, but it needs to work correctly every time: there's no second chance if the code is stale. Menujo's QR points at a permanent URL, so it survives every menu edit you make between the day you configure the POS template and the day a customer actually scans it months later.
The QR downloads as a PNG (SVG on Pro and Business) directly from the dashboard, sized to drop into the receipt image slot on POS systems that accept one, such as Toast and Clover, without needing a separate QR-generation step (on Square, see the logo note above; Lightspeed K-Series can also print your menu URL as a native QR in a footer line). Because the destination page is mobile-optimized and loads quickly, it works even on the spotty WiFi common near a POS terminal or register area.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size QR works on a thermal-printer receipt?
2-3cm is a practical size for 80mm-wide receipt rolls. Below 2cm, the lower printer resolution can cause scan issues. Test with actual prints, because what looks fine on screen may not print sharply.
Can I have different receipt CTAs for different times of day?
Many POS systems let you change the footer message whenever you like, so you can swap it by service period or season by hand. Automatic time-based rotation depends on your POS and plan tier, so check with your vendor. For most operators, picking one CTA per quarter and rotating quarterly is sufficient.
Will customers actually scan a QR code from a receipt?
Some will. Scan rates vary, so measure your own with a separate receipt menu (see the tracking step above) rather than relying on a benchmark. Receipt scans often happen at home, when the customer is relaxed and more likely to engage with the menu, share it with friends, or leave a review.
Should the receipt QR link to the menu, a review page, or a loyalty signup?
Pick one based on your current need. Menu link: drives repeat visit + sharing. Review page: lifts review volume. Loyalty signup: builds email list. Different goals, different CTAs. Don't cram all three on one receipt: choice paralysis kills conversion.
Does the QR receipt approach work for kiosk receipts (drive-thru, QSR)?
Yes. Kiosk receipts are a high-volume channel, and kiosk customers are already comfortable with self-service tech. Match the QR CTA to QSR context: 'Scan for our menu' works; 'Scan for review' may convert less for QSR.
What if my POS doesn't support custom receipt images?
Many current POS systems support a footer image. For legacy POS without this feature: use plain-text receipt footer with a short URL (your menu URL or bit.ly shortened). Less convenient than QR but still viable. Customers can type a 12-character URL.
How does this compare to digital receipts (emailed)?
Email receipts can include rich HTML, which is better for menu links, photos, and CTAs. Many restaurants offer both: paper receipt (with QR) by default + email receipt (rich HTML) on customer request. Email captures the customer's email for future marketing; paper QR works for cash payments + walk-ins who don't share email.
Should I include the menu QR on takeaway box receipts too?
Yes, and ideally include leftover storage tips on the takeaway receipt, for example: 'Refrigerate within 2 hours. Reheat to 165°F. Best within 3 days.' (based on USDA leftovers guidance). This is goodwill that customers remember; the QR is the bonus.
